Reading Club - 1st-2nd Grade


In this course, students will read 6 carefully selected picture books and 1 children chapter book (over 2 class periods). This course’s main goal is to cultivate in students a love for reading. In addition, students will learn efficient reading habits, and critical thinking. Each class will be divided between fun activities focusing the story logic, moral, vocabulary, and basic rhetorical devices. Students will learn the basic skills to engage with a text, and build a solid foundation for future, more advanced readings There will also be writing activity weaved into the class to help students practice their newly-learned skills.

Course Objectives:

Students will be able to

  • Read with an accuracy of no more than 10 errors/ 100words

  • Make 3 thoughtful predictions of what might happen in the text after reading the first few paragraphs, and peeking ahead at pictures 

  • Retell, in sequence, the important details from the beginning, middle, end of the book

  • Identify the main events in the story 

  • Use the vocabulary and phrases from the text to construct sentences

  • Understand the authors’ message and purpose of writing the story
