Course Content

Overview

Our Beginner Mandarin class is designed for young learners with little to no exposure to the Chinese language. Students will be introduced to basic Mandarin vocabulary, tones, and simple phrases through interactive activities, songs, and games. The emphasis is on making learning enjoyable and engaging, helping children become familiar with basic vocabulary, Chinese characters, and simple phrases.

Objectives

Learn Vocabulary:
Students will learn essential Mandarin words related to everyday objects, colors, and common activities. For instance, they will become familiar with numbers (一, 二, 三), colors (红, 蓝, 绿), family members (爸爸, 妈妈), and animals (狗, 猫).
Develop Listening Skills:
Students will recognize and understand simple phrases and commands through repetitive and engaging activities. This includes practicing greetings (你好) and understanding basic instructions (坐下).
Learn Chinese Characters:
Students will recognize and trace simple Chinese characters, focusing on those corresponding to their learned vocabulary. For example, students will practice characters for numbers (一, 二, 三) and simple nouns(人，耳，口).
Encourage Pronunciation:
Students will practice proper pronunciation of common phrases and words to build a strong spoken foundation. Emphasis will be placed on correct pronunciation and tone through playful exercises and interactive games.
Learn Verbal Communication:
Students will develop listening and speaking skills, able to understand and respond to simple phrases and commands in Mandarin. For example, they will practice greetings (e.g., 你好), asking basic questions (e.g., 你好吗?), and simple responses (e.g., 我很好).
Foster Cultural Curiosity:
Stories, songs, and activities will introduce basic elements of Chinese culture. Students will explore cultural themes such as traditional festivals and everyday life in China, enhancing their cultural understanding.

Overview

The Intermediate Mandarin class is designed for young learners who have some foundational knowledge of Mandarin. This level focuses on expanding vocabulary, introducing basic sentence structures, and enhancing listening and speaking skills through engaging activities. Students will also start reading short texts, deconstructing Chinese characters, exploring Chinese culture, and understanding emotional contexts.

Objectives

Learn Basic Sentence Structure:
Students will practice constructing simple sentences using their new vocabulary. They will learn to describe objects, express preferences, and engage in basic conversation (e.g., 我喜欢萝卜, 这只袋鼠很可爱).
Expand Vocabulary:
Students will learn more advanced vocabulary related to everyday themes, such as body parts (e.g., 眼睛, 鼻子, 耳朵), nature (e.g., 日, 月, 水, 火), and animals (e.g., 袋鼠, 小蝌蚪). This vocabulary will be practiced through stories, songs, and interactive exercises.
Develop Listening and Speaking Skills:
Through role-playing and interactive activities, students will improve their ability to understand and use longer sentences in Mandarin. They will practice asking and answering questions on familiar topics, enhancing their conversational skills (e.g., 你长大想做当什么？，我想当医生).
Deconstruct Chinese Characters:
Students will learn to recognize and write more complex characters by understanding their components and strokes. They will break down characters like “吃”，“河”，“眼” into basic elements “口字旁”，“氵”，“目字旁”and learn how these components combine to form meaningful words.
Explore Chinese Culture:
Students will explore cultural elements such as festivals (传统节日), traditional stories (传统故事), and customs (传统习俗). They will participate in activities that reflect cultural practices and be able to discuss these aspects in simple terms.
Understand Emotional Context:
Students will learn to identify and articulate emotions such as 开心 (Happy), 生气 (Angry), and 难过 (Sad) in stories and songs that explore various emotions, helping students to understand and express feelings in Mandarin.

Overview

The Advanced Mandarin class builds on the foundation established in Level 1, delving deeper into language structures, critical thinking, and cultural understanding. Students will enhance their reading and writing skills, develop complex sentence structures, and explore more sophisticated language use.

Objectives

Pinyin Mastery:
Students will deepen their understanding of Pinyin, focusing on complex vowel combinations (复韵母) such as "ai," "ei," and "ui," as well as challenging consonants (辅音) like "zh," "ch," and "sh." For example, they will practice distinguishing between similar-sounding Pinyin like "qī (七, seven)" and "xī (西, west)."
Reading Comprehension:
Students will analyze longer texts, summarize main ideas, and make inferences. For example, after reading "狐狸和乌鸦 (The Fox and the Crow)," they will discuss character motivations and the story's moral.
Critical Thinking:
Students will compare texts, evaluate characters’ decisions, and relate stories to real life. For instance, in "美丽的公鸡 (The Beautiful Rooster)," they will explore how cultural context affects character behavior.
Character Writing and Stroke Order:
Students will practice writing characters with correct stroke order and structure. They will trace and write characters like 种 (plant) and 你 (you) to improve their writing skills.
Complex Sentence Structures:
Students will construct compound and complex sentences, using phrases like "虽然...但是 (Although...but)" and "一会儿...一会儿 (Now and then)." They will integrate these into their writing and speaking.
Cultural Exploration:
Students will study cultural topics like festivals and historical figures. For example, they will learn about the Dragon Boat Festival (端午节)and its significance through storytelling and activities.
Story Sequencing and Prediction:
Students will organize events from a story and predict future outcomes. For example, after "一粒种子 (A Seed)," they will sequence events and forecast what happens next.

Overview

The Master Mandarin class is designed for students with a solid foundation in the language. It focuses on advanced reading, writing, and understanding of modern and classical texts, including fables and myths. Students will refine their writing skills, explore complex sentence structures, and gain insights into cultural and historical contexts.

Objectives

Short Essay Writing:
Students will develop their ability to write short essays on various topics, focusing on organization, argumentation, and clarity. They will write essays on topics such as "My Chinese Family" (我的中国家庭) or " My Favorite Fable" （我最爱的寓言故事）demonstrating their understanding and ability to express their thoughts in Mandarin.
Deep Reading:
Students delve into complex narratives, including fables and myths such as "愚公移山 (The Foolish Old Man Who Removed the Mountains)." Through detailed analysis, they uncover underlying themes, character development, and plot intricacies, enhancing their critical reading skills.
Vocabulary Expansion:
Students will broaden their vocabulary by learning words related to advanced topics in their readings. For example, they will learn terms like "智慧 (wisdom)," "勇气 (courage)," and "挑战 (challenge)" and use them in context.
Grammar and Syntax Review:
Students will review and apply advanced grammatical structures and syntax in their writing and speaking. They will focus on complex sentence structures, such as conditional sentences and passive voice. For instance, they will practice sentences like "如果我有时间，我会读更多的书 (If I had time, I would read more books)."
Pinyin Proficiency:
Students will enhance their Pinyin skills, focusing on accurate pronunciation and tone distinctions in more complex words. They will practice differentiating between similar-sounding words, such as "zhū (猪, pig)" and "zhū (珠, pearl)," ensuring they can accurately convey meaning in both speech and writing.
Cultural Context Exploration:
Students will explore the cultural and historical context of the texts they read, understanding how historical events and cultural practices influence literature. For example, they will study the historical background of "岳飞学写字 (Yue Fei Learns to Write)" and discuss how historical figures are depicted in literature.
